PostScript Fonts

The PostScript font format was developed by Adobe Systems, Inc. PostScript fonts are used by graphic designers and printers for desktop publishing applications like Adobe InDesign and QuarkXPress. It is the preferred format for printed output and high resolution imagesetters. PostScript fonts are limited to 256 characters. The names encoding method is used in PostScript fonts. This means that the font identifiers are names like “slash”, “colon”, “comma”, “hyphen”, “period”, etc. PostScript fonts use two files – one file containing the PostScript font outlines and one file containing the font metrics and screen fonts.
